If you're seeking a fresh experience, a unique learning opportunity, or simply some 'you' time, allow us to introduce you to a place where you can unleash your creative spirit. Nestled amidst the vibrant chaos of Cairene life is a distinctly woven haven in New Cairo, where colourful threads narrate tales of a passion for creation, from crafting your own tufted summer rug and doormat to weaving personalised bags and clutches.

Tuft Egypt Academy, an Egyptian venture founded by Tuqa Momtaz and Nada Selim, offers tufting supplies, services and workshops. With their interdisciplinary backgrounds and education, they have curated a diverse range of thread-related services and classes, such as their flagship Tufting workshop, along with workshops in punch needle, weaving and macrame.

Designed to be messy, the New Cairo workshop space offers a variety of seating options and a cosy coffee corner to make you feel at home. Upon entering, you are welcomed to immerse yourself in the eclectic surroundings, allowing you to declutter your mind from negative thoughts. Alongside moments of utter excitement and interaction, there are also times of complete silence, where each participant finds an inner zen space with their needle in hand, simply relieving all stress.

In the summer, you can find them on the North Coast at The Lighthouse, Mountain View's experiential destination dedicated to promoting the science of happiness, with the workshop space open every day with all crafts available for as long as they’re open.

“The workshops are typically a very safe public space for interactions and connections. Especially during the summer season, our Sahel workshops focus on building strong relationships with everyone who attends,” founder Tuqa Momtaz tells SceneHome. “Many people return multiple times to enjoy the vibes and build new friendships. Some come to sit and chat, while others spend time in silence, fully immersed in their own space. We strive to accommodate all needs, creating an open and welcoming environment for everyone.”

This year, Tuft Egypt Academy announced its first-ever Craft Open Day. Selected days will be revealed monthly throughout the summer season, inviting everyone to join and explore a variety of crafting activities.

Their deep-seated philosophy on craftsmanship - what it signifies and how it should be perceived - reflects their intention for workshops to be seen as more than mere leisure. Rather, they envision it as a journey loaded with challenges and triumphs, where diligent effort culminates in a sense of fulfilment. “Part of the experience is understanding the effort and challenges involved in this craft. Full immersion is necessary, and craftsmanship should not be undervalued. By fully engaging, you will feel a deep sense of satisfaction with the outcome. We are committed to raising awareness and ensuring this value is conveyed,” Momtaz shares.
