Historic Tiring Building in Downtown Cairo Sees Renovation Progress

Downtown Cairo’s iconic Tiring Building is regaining its original grandeur through a meticulous restoration that celebrates its layered architectural heritage.

Renovation work on Downtown Cairo’s Tiring Building is showing progress, with its exterior steadily returning to its original form as one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

Built in the early 20th century, the Tiring Building combined Baroque architecture with eclectic and neo-classical elements. At the time of its construction, it was the closest thing the region had to a modern shopping mall. Over decades, it became layered with history, but also suffered from neglect and unsympathetic alterations.

The restoration aims to return both the exterior and interior to their authentic state. Architect Mostafa Salem, leading the design side, says the progress is satisfactory despite hurdles. The dome has drawn attention as some believed some features were removed. “A cladding layer had deteriorated, exposing its structure, which people believed was ornamental," Salem says. "The smooth dome you see now is the closest to what it originally was."

Challenges stem from complex ownership: the property is divided between multiple entities, with some shops privately owned and parts of the interior held illegally. Entities involved in the renovation include the Cairo Governorate, the National Organization for Urban Harmony, and the Ministries of Local Development and Housing.

“It’s not a simple, single-owner project,” Salem says. “But we’ve started moving in the right direction and that’s a success on its own. The long-term priority is maintenance and sustainability. The building is fragile and will need constant care.”

Modern requirements that were absent from the original design, such as air-conditioning, are being integrated without altering the historic look, but the shop owners' cooperation is key to the renovation’s success. For Salem, the shop owners' cooperation and public awareness are key to the renovation’s continued success: “When people connect with their heritage, they will protect it.”

The Tiring Building’s revival is part of a broader effort to revive Downtown Cairo’s architectural identity, ensuring its legacy endures for future generations.
